DiscoverFile only makes network requests in two situations, and neither involves your files or personal data. First, periodic license and update checks — a lightweight ping to validate your license key and check for new versions. Second, if you choose to click “Open in Google Maps” on a geotagged photo, your browser opens that link. That’s it. Every feature — indexing, searching, browsing, thumbnails, EXIF extraction, duplicates, exports — works entirely offline with no cloud, no accounts, and no data ever leaving your machine.
Absolutely. That's the core feature. Once a drive is indexed, you can search filenames, browse folder trees, view thumbnails, see EXIF metadata, view interactive map locations, and more — all without the drive connected.
Roughly 10 MB per 100,000 files for the index. Thumbnails are 5-15 KB each at 256x256. A 100K photo drive uses about 10 MB + 500 MB - 1.5 GB for thumbnails. This can vary heavily depending how many thumbnails you have.
You can view the properties of the applications storage in C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local\DiscoverFile.
Yes. DiscoverFile supports USB removable drives, fixed drives, microSD and network-mapped drives (via UNC paths) are all supported and detected automatically. Simply map your NAS to 'This PC' under a Drive letter and enjoy!
